WANA (Jan 22) – Despite Iran’s consistent assertions that it has no intention of pursuing nuclear weapons, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged the country to clearly demonstrate its commitment to non-proliferation. On Wednesday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Guterres emphasized the need for Iran to take the first step toward de-escalating tensions in the West Asia region.

Guterres highlighted the risks posed by the current geopolitical climate in West Asia and warned that without decisive action, significant regional tensions could erupt. “The first step must come from Iran. Otherwise, we risk heightened tensions,” he stated, urging Tehran to recognize the importance of such measures for regional peace and stability.

Addressing Nuclear Concerns

The UN chief also called on Iran to address ongoing concerns about its nuclear activities. He expressed hope that Tehran would recognize the benefits of taking constructive steps and clarified his stance: “It is utterly implausible to imagine Iran pursuing nuclear weapons. This is a bet no one should take.”

Advocating Transparency and Dialogue

Guterres stressed the importance of transparent communication and constructive engagement. “We must unequivocally clarify that this scenario will not unfold. It is time to engage constructively toward a new security framework for the region, one that respects the sovereignty of all nations,” he asserted.

Economic Integration and Global Implications

He further noted that these measures would pave the way for Iran’s full integration into the global economy, emphasizing the broader implications of this issue for international peace. Guterres concluded by calling for international collaboration to ensure regional stability and security.
